Fine art meeting 02 - concept proposal

Met up with the fine art committee and Sheila today to discuss any immediate ideas and thoughts they have for concepts on the yearbooks in response to what we presented and discussed with them the previous week.

They provided us with two different potential titles that we could start working from;

Tacit Knowledge : knowledge that is difficult to transfer verbally. eg: learning to ride a bike. This related directly to how they wanted to be represented as a course and also gives us quite an open and experimental start to our design direction.

The other idea was 'If someone speaks' but was later dropped as they didn't want to relate it directly to Fraud, which the quote was initially taken from.

SO, from this meeting we have a more grounded direction and a concept to work from. We aim to arrange for a meeting with them in about a weeks time to allow ourselves enough time to experiment, generate some design direction ideas and develop the concept a bit more.

Amon Clothing

Interesting design direction for Amon Clothing. Some inspiration on possibilities for the fashion look book that I'll be working on after research week. One of the things that make's something work is the consistency of the design materials across a range of materials, something that this set of work has captured very well.

Oskar Kron

Some quality work from London based Oskar Kron. There's a healthy mixture of work with varying disciplines and  all produced to a high standard and detailed consideration to every aspect of it from the colours, stock, format to the type and images used. Most of his work covers the cultural sector aswell as a few self initiated projects, which Is what I'm interested in myself.

'Jag skriver troligen till dig men du tycks inte vilja läsa'

Björn Bengtsson

Minimal book with exposed bind and a very simple layout inside. Not entirely sure what this is about but it's interesting to see such a simple project with. Something that's given me some ideas for a self initiated project myself.

An increasing technique that I keep seeing more often recently, the method of reconstructing the type enough to make it more interesting but not enough for it to be illegible.

Project Projects

I've referred to the work of Project Projects before, the New York based design agency has always been able to deliver high quality, conceptually sound design solutions predominantly for printed output. After working on the Garry Barker brief and with a potential client within the cultural sector approaching, I am ever increasingly finding exhibition work more appealing to work on.

Really nice use of type and balance of letting the work be the main focus of the piece. Typeface used is also really nice, will need to find out what it is.

Identity, print, and website design for a newly-opened gallery on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The identity system uses a customized version of the 1970s typeface Trooper Roman.

Designed in collaboration with artist Andrea Geyer, this map presents the history of early 20th-century model Audrey Munson, featuring sites throughout Manhattan with sculptures bearing her likeness.

Love this piece with the type and the map in the background. I've really been fascinated with mapping systems and navigation, so really wanted to produce something along the lines of mapping. Looking at this piece alone has given me some ideas on what I could do for one of my future projects.

Komma Magazine No.7

Komma Magazine, a nice piece of editorial, demonstrating  interesting layout and type consideration. The simple packaging is a nice tough to the feel and experience of the publication, something that I could possibly consider for future publication projects, or any brief in general really. Quite often I find that I just stop when I get the final design solution, and completely forget to push the outcome a bit further.

I do like the fold out format of this booklet though, another unique touch along with the use of monotone imagery and solid blocks of justified text.

Salut Public

Salut Public is a graphic design studio based in Belgium and Paris. Judging by the work on their site, they seem to have a focus on printed design matter particularly publications driven by type and photography.

Fondation Zinsou

A strong collection of publication designs for a range different industries. Some interesting combination of prominent type and black & white imagery put together with a rather unconventional layout. Really like this approach with layout, it seems very consistent and considered yet it doesn't really conform to any obvious guides. Something that I aim to experiment and practice more with my own layouts.

I think the key for achieving this would be the balance of following strict grid systems and having a spontaneous approach to it aswell.

Wolu-Culture

A publication showcasing a collection of art work ranging from paintings to installations, which is relevant to my contextual research towards the BA fine art yearbook. Something that I had in mind for it was quite similar to this example, quite type driven, plenty of white space to display the work and varying image sizes and layout that sit within a tight grid. The variations of layouts keep this interesting and utilises the book size/format to display each project at it's full potential and depending on the type of work, some spreads are more type driven, whereas other will be full bleed imagery.

Studio Berg

Edinburgh based studio Berg
Design for print screen & the environment

Some solid work from Berg, a recent find and I'm impressed straight away.

A particular favourite of mine is the Freytag branding materials and promotional work. Great minimal and functional design with a considered use of stock, colour and type.
