Fine Art final fliers

Made further amendments to the fliers for the Fine Art end of year shows. Both designs were picked to be used, 2000 fliers are required so 1000 of each colour will be printed! Just need to make final amendments to the dates and we'll be able to send them off for print next week.

Flyer Development

Between myself and Ed, we have revised and selected the strongest developments and have come to a conclusion that we'll use these designs to present to fine art. We have got 2 directions really, one is quite clean and simple which follows the original approach of the yearbook, whereas the other one starts to incorporate some of the images into them; something that we had experimented with right at the start of this brief for the Graphic Design yearbook pitch.

Here are Ed's developments for the flyers. It's evident that we have a few similar directions, but in general Ed's stronger ones seem to be more focused on the front side of the flyer.

Along with the yearbook, the fine art committee wanted us to develop flyer for their end of year show and graduate art show which will be touring to Free Range aswell as at the college of art. Taking the design direction that we had already from the yearbook, Ed and I developed some of our ideas for the A5 flyer. We wanted to keep it consistent with the yearbook whilst still making it visually engaging.

Below are my developments of these flyers. (front & back.) We both worked separately to begin with, developing our own ideas based on the direction that has already been used throughout the yearbook, these include using the same typefaces, the type for the title of the book and the exhibition details are all set to the same specification as the yearbook. The main challenge with this was to develop something that was grab people's attention whilst still delivery the relevant information.

Yearbook further revisions

Along with the front/back & inside covers that I have mainly been working on today, the others focused on the remaining spreads such as the introduction page, contents and a few profile pages that require some adjustments. 95% of the yearbook was good to go at this point, so only a few minor tweaks here and there.

The more notable changes include changing the leading throughout the publication from 7.5/13.5 to 7.5/12.5. We have broken the type rule, but felt that it fits in with the whole feel and direction of the rest of the book so kept with this decision. We've also decided to make the inside cover's black to contrast with the white front/back covers.

If all is checked and good to go, we'll just need to update the document with correct page numbers and make a few minor improvements with the kerning of the names for each profile page.

Fine Art Meeting : Complete mockup

Went to meet the fine art committee literally 20 minutes ago to show them our current mockup, a selection of final spreads printed in full scale in colour and a complete PDF of the whole book. Feedback in general was really positive, they loved the layout and the design direction that we have pursued aswell as the overall structure of the book and the treatment of the images. A few things that we needed to revise from now are a couple of break spreads where the images will be replaced with better ones to represent the course.

A few student spreads also had minor issues regarding the images, so these will need to be rectified. And finally we'll need to get together to develop a final front cover ready for Monday's proof.

Currently we're waiting on them to provide us with the final copy for the introduction aswell as the details for the credits and Free Range details.

Fine Art yearbook 1st mockup

Managed to get an almost complete mockup of the fine art yearbook, printed at a slightly smaller scale in black & white. Spreads were printed on 80gsm from the laser printers and the cover was on the 245gsm matt. This mockup was produced mainly to give a rough idea of what the book would look like in terms of the scale, how the images sit when there's a bind and also to have something physical to flick through rather than looking at flat spreads.

We decided to allocate the spreads between the whole group to increase productivity and to get a fair input of developing the yearbook. I wasn't too sure about this decision really as I felt that we were at the point where we'd really need to get everyone together to work on it now but the majority agreed to work this way for the time being.

The final ones we selected to use with the intention to develop them further:

Progress of the yearbook is going relatively well so far, considering all the breaks from college we've had and all the other briefs and collaborations we've all had separately which all add towards setting a date to work together much more difficult. The quality of the work we've been developing is quite consistent I think, we all seem to share similar ideas on how we want this to work and are all quite vocal with our opinions throughout the process.

So far we are at the stage where we're putting the whole book together in it's initial order as planned. We are currently waiting for the rest of the spreads to come together, before we can group together again to make adjustments before printing a full mockup out ready for the crit and to show the fine art committee for feedback.

In terms of the management of the project and meeting production deadlines, I think we're pretty much on target for print deadlines and hopefully meeting the budget. The only issue we have at the moment is the matt black foil block for the front cover. This will be something we'll have to develop and are currently waiting for a final confirmation on whether our design fits within the A6 size limitation or not.
