With the recent failure of winning the end of year pitch, and the thirst for producing a publication that had the guidance of a client, Dave and I decided to collaborate to work on the interior design book/prospectus.
We spoke to Steve Edge, the course leader of interior design a few days ago to discuss what it is he actually has in mind for this, the format, tone and a brief explanation of the content that it would hold. The general idea of this is to produce a fairly comprehensive publication that would act as a prospectus rather than a year book for the BA (hons) interior design course.
From the meeting, Steve seems to have some idea of how he wants this to go, but is generally open for us to make our own interpretations and design direction based on what he's provided and what we feel is necessary to represent the course, whilst still fitting within the college's brand and reputation. There hasn't been a previous book of this kind for the interior design course, so this should be quite open for us to develop our own ideas of how it should be. He provided a few samples from other institutions,
Foundations Juried Exhibition - American University of Sharjan
Summer Exhibition 2010 - Department of Architecture and spacial design - London Metropolitan university
Manchester Art & Design Postgraduate
Interior Design 1999 - The summer collection. UCE school of interior design
UCE School of interior design - Birmingham institute of art & design. 2002 degree show catalogue
He also mention that the type of publicatiion and designs he liked would be of magazines like Wallpaper*, Frame and Blueprint, all catering for more of the higher end lifestyle, interior, architecture and product design nature.
All in all, the brief seems pretty exciting, currently waiting for some copy and a brief structure so we can start working on how we should work on this. In the mean time, we plan to develop some initial design ideas for this including spreads and front cover aswell as some inspiring publications and designs that we'd like to incorporate into this brief.
For me, I'd really like to take this opportunity to develop something professional and interesting in terms of the design, both for the course and my own portfolio, I'm quite excited with how this can develop and also the collaboration with Dave should be quite interesting.
