We chose to work on the concept of the type expanding out of the cover and falling back it from the opposite side as this relates directly back to the layout characteristics and the title of 'What we cannot say'. Not only did the committee really like this feature, they encouraged the use of it throughout and really liked the bold type for it. One thing that was still unclear with us was which typeface they preferred, maybe this was a case of deciding between us as it might be something that we could possibly make a more informed decision on. However, we felt that it was only fair that they should have a view and decide on this matter, so worked on both typefaces for the various developments.
The main direction was quite clear from the start of these, it was just a matter of tweaking with the type, alignments, scale and general composition between the title and the smaller type about the course itself aswell. We continued experimenting with the shifted effected of the type, utilising it as a function to further distort and add motion to the type and cover in general as it's going to be black & white.
Below are the various layout developments, in terms of print production and costs, we're still aiming to get either a spot varnish or matte black foil for the title, however this will depend on the final budget and costs of printing aswell as how it would work and whether it would be necessary anymore, particularly as some of the developments had full bleed type on - this might become an issue if it was to be foil blocked.
These were the final 5 that we had chosen to print out to present. A variation of designs that use both Akkurat and Quicksand, pushing both layout specifications.
And here they are printed and folded how they should look hopefully:
One interesting detail that we noticed when we placed them out was how easily the type could line up, creating a continue image created by the type joining together. This is definitely an interesting idea that we should push for and try to utilise and it would look rather striking especially at the end of year shows and when they take them to freerange exhibition.
The spine at the moment is less of an issue compared to the cover as it would most likely just be printed, following the guides of the spreads and typeface that has already be decided.
